Thanks. Very Helpful Article. I have binge eating disorder and have been abstinent for about 7 months. I initially wondered if these flutters that felt like an adrenalin wash you'd get after being in a fender bender or other frightening, but non-injurious situation were caused by my body reacting to no longer abusing sugar, caffeine, gluten, etc. But then I noticed they seemed to be tied to current stress or memories of past stressful events. After 7 months, though I rarely crave food anymore, when I am in a stressful situation I do get this odd reaction in my gut that seems very out of proportion to the stressful event. I recognize I could easily calm this reaction with a binge, but I choose not to. I wait it out, even if it takes hours. A warm bath or a distraction like a good book or movie usually helps.

The fact that my stomach brain is reacting to current stress or memories/associations with former stressful events makes a weird sort of instinctive sense.

Why are there no comments to this article? I wasn't sure if I was writing a letter to Wendy or a public comment.

Hey good article. I was looking for a scientific explanation for the butterflies. You wrote many curiosities but also it gets somewhat grotesque too, like in the end. Good job.
